Disloyal!

By saywhat - 26/11/2010 03:28 - United States

Today, I was at my boyfriend's house for dinner with his family. His mom cooked up a steak dinner, except that I'm a vegan, but trying to be a good girlfriend, I forced it down. Upon his mother finding out I was a vegan, she called me "disloyal to my beliefs." FML

You ate flesh just to impress your boyfriend's family? Yea please don't identify yourself as a vegan.

Ydi for being a vegan in the first place... I know you kids think it makes you cool but there's proof it's not as healthy for you as you hear people tell you..

I'm vegetarian but taking no dairy is way too unhealthy. every child is supposed to breastfeed. it's in our nature. dairy is food not friend.

Breastfeeding is better than bottle-feeding: truth. However, if the child is born lactose intolerant for whatever reason, they can not have either and need to be put on a bottled soy formula. You can also find nutrients usually found in dairy products in other foods; for example, calcium is found in broccoli and other leafy greens, and vitamin D, which helps to absorb the calcium (I think) can be found in certain nuts. Keep in mind I have only given one example per nutrient, and that there are many more sources out there.

Not all vegans refuse to breast feed. I know a vegan family who breast-fed until their daughter was 4, and a couple of others who breast fed for shorter time periods. The ones I know feel that breast-milk is different from other dairy because it was created specifically for their baby, whereas cows (or goats or whatever else) milk is for calves, not humans.

Good point, Boatkicker. Though, I must say, 4 years seems a tad too long. I'm not trying to judge here; maybe they had their reasons.

well being vegan is a great thing and I know lots of ppl who are vegan and fall in one of the food traps satiation ,it just that our society have programmed people to always eat meat , and I would lie if I told you that I'm vegan but believe me let poeple say what they wanna say as long as you are doing the right thing

Kudos to you for not being they typical vegan asshole! Most vegans I know feel the need to lecture everyone in earshot whenever they're even near an animal product someone is trying to enjoy.

that's totally your fault. next time tell her your a vegan. being a good girlfriend doesn't mean following what everyone else is doing. you gotta stand up for what you believe in.

Ok, so you shouldn't have eaten the steak. But I still don't get WHY people are vegetarians/vegans. The animal's already dead, might as well eat it! You're not saving it by not eating it.

the animals are killed for their meat because people demand them to be killed for it. or did you think all steaks came from old cows who died of natural causes after a long and happy life? it is a fact that most people eat way too much meat. 200 grams a WEEK is the recommended amount to stay healthy, and it can easily be replaced by other products. meat used to be a luxury product that normal people would only have on special occasions.

It's a little late now, but next time "Thank you for the meal, it looks wonderful, but unfortunately I'm vegan. I can't eat meat. I should have warned you in advance. I'm sorry." Then change the subject so you don't seem preachy, and enjoy the rest of your meal.
