Today, I found out that the man who sold me my car 6 months ago lied about it being "recently serviced" and "in excellent condition". It actually hasn't been serviced in years, and fixing all its problems is going to cost me $900 more than what I paid for the car. FML

That's why you always ask if you can have a mechanic look it over for you before you buy it. I'm completely ignorant about cars, and even I know that much.

rule #1 about buying used cars, ALWAYS ALWAYS have AT LEAST 2 different mechanics inspect it before you buy it! and NEVER use the guy the car owner suggests because they could have worked something out with them in advance

Post #76 - Thank you, very helpful. I am actually taking the car to different mechanics today to get different quotes. I admit that I know nothing about cars, which is why I actually did take a mechanic to look at the car with me when I bought it. He said that he couldn't see anything wrong with it so he must either be not a very good mechanic, or the seller had hidden the problems very well. The mechanic I took my car to yesterday when my car started shaking violently on the freeway said that it looks like the problems have been there for ages, definitely longer than 6 months. And to all the people suggesting I should have used CarFax, I live in Australia. It doesn't exist here.

The people who repeatedly say Car fax!!! obviously do not know much about purchasing a car. Car fax does not necessarily show all repairs, and it doesn't necessarily show all damages. The best thing to do is to take the car to a reputable mechanic. A piece of paper from a random company can never replace that. As for the car, used car sales are almost always considered "as is" and "lemon laws" usually only apply to dealers. Unless you can prove that that person completely misrepresented themselves there is nothing you can do. Chances are there is nothing you can do though since you have had the vehicle for 6 months and he can claim that anything wrong with it has happened since you purchased it.

And no, the car did not cost $900. The repairs are going to cost the price I paid for the car, plus an extra $900 on top of that.

That seems odd because all cars need a roadworthy certificate in Australia signed by a proper mechanic. I couldn't even get my fathers old car put into my name without getting one and for awhile there we almost didn't get it because 1 electric window didn't work. We were told if we don't get it we can't transfer ownership. I am surprised not only you got ownership transfer and if you did you have the name of the so called mechanic and can talk to him about the issues. If he is doing a forgery on that blue slips he could get in major trouble. My regular mechanic stopped doing it when I asked them to do my dads car because they had to many people trying to get them to slip past small and even big things and it was a legal nightmare. Also yeah why did you not bring someone who knows cars with you or have a clause your own mechanic would look at it the next day before paying. Hopefully this mistake will make you read up more before major purchases and not end up like a friend of mine who claimed he didn't know you had to read the mortgage contract so it wasn't his fault he was defaulting because he didn't know.

900 bucks for all of its problems? that ain't so bad. you're an idiot and that 's the only thing that i know is true for sure about this post.

If you had read it properly, you would see that the repairs cost me $900 MORE than what I paid for the car. So car price + $900. You can't understand basic sentences, but yes, clearly I am the idiot.

she is from Australia, no carfax. she should have asked to see the receipts though.

you always have a mechanic see a used car before you buy it, you're only proving that a guy should be there

I did have a mechanic look at it, see my comment above. And he was a guy. Clearly the fact that he was a man didn't stop him from being a bad mechanic, as he failed to spot the problems with it. So keep your sexist generalisations to yourself.
