Depends on where the metre is. My neighbour has one that's located on the side of the house but the previous owner built a fence in front of it. So the fence has to be accessible for the gas company people, which sucks because that means others could potentially walk through it also. Thankfully, the neighbourhood isn't in the dodgy part of town.
