Get outta here

By lea5459 - This FML is from back in 2012 but it's good stuff - United States - Medford

Today, my parents kindly told me what they are getting me for my 18th birthday. An eviction notice. FML

The mama bird has to kick the baby bird out of the nest eventually. The baby bird should shit on the nest before it leaves.

I can't figure out why people like that have kids. Honestly, it's incredible, kicking your child out like that ._.

Assuming you have a job, and that you like living at home, maybe suggest that you pay them rent each month so you can stay? I've had friends who pay their parents a few hundred dollars a month as rent to transition into living on their own; seems to work out pretty well. Good luck OP!

That's what I do! I'm moving out though in the next year. Totally worth it to live with your parents for a while.

I was paying 600$ a month at 16. And my own food. But then again I was still in high school at 18. I'm moved out married have one kid and another on the way at 19. And rent is only 80$ more a month

From OP's parents? Thats pretty weird so I'm thumbing you down

If he is working and what not then it sucks, but in that case he should be paying them something which usually would eliminate these issues. If he is a lazy kid not doing anything or trying, it took me a while to find a job, then he deserves it (by the sounds of it i doubt this is the case).

That is so harsh! Why - on your birthday too? You are 18 - how can you live on your own??? By which I mean.. any job you get probs won't pay enough to rent a place and keep food and bills. If you go to college it is even harder :(

That's what I got, your and adult now, get used to it.

...My 18th birthday is coming up too and my parents got me the new Wii U. :) Gotta love having parents that love you.

Material possessions don't indicate how much your parents love you, and in fact OP's parents might be doing OP the biggest favor by pushing him to get his own place and find a job. Besides it's a Wii U, don't get too excited.

Well since I'm a huge Nintendo fan I am extremely excited. Also I get that maybe they're trying to teach their kid a lesson on growing up and being an adult but they could've just told OP to find a job and start paying rent until he saves up a bit instead of just kicking him out right away. All that is going to do is make OP hate his parents. And then when they're too old to wipe their own ass guess who won't be there to help them... Its a cycle of spitefulness and evil.

It's hard to tell if it's FYL or YDI from what little information we're given in this post. I mean, if OP's a good kid who does his chores and stuff then it's a FYL. On the other hand, if he's anything like my brother (Makes huge messes and doesn't clean them up, stays up all night then doesn't go to class, talks back, etc.) I can definitely see why his parents would want him out of there as soon as legally possible.

My parents made me start paying $500 rent each month when I turned 18. I fully understand why, and it helps me to budget. I could find a place that is cheaper, but I enjoy my room. You could suggest paying them rent?

I LOVE my girls but even now at 14 and 12 they have been fully warned THEY DON'T GET TO STAY! Eff this free ride everyone seems to think they are entitled to. My parents sent me out into the world and I made it just fine. Grow up, get a jobby job and out of my house!

I guess thats why it sucks to be you huh.

Nobody said anything about getting 'free rides'. What if they payed you rent? Would you let them stay, or are you eager to turn their rooms into workout stations?

I'm glad someone else agrees. God damn people. An 18 year old is an adult.

Oh puhlease! Who said anything about a free ride? They're only 18! Tell them to either go to college, pay some rent, or move out if they refuse to do either of those things. Give them till the end of the summer or end of the year. Gee, how nice it must be for those parents who have fulltime jobs and are able to pay the mortgage/rent on time every month. Guess what? Any 18 year old heading out into the world will be EXTREMELY lucky if they can find a fulltime job anywhere that will pay them enough to pay rent for an apartment or buy a house. I'm 24 years old and had to move back in with my parents after I graduated college because I was unable to find fulltime job! I pay my parents 25% of all my paychecks because I have my own bills too, like one credit card and hmm, oh let me see, student loans, because I'd like to get out of my thousands and thousands in debt sometime during my life. My point is that with this economy, unless your kid makes enough to move out, kicking them out and expecting them to just make it is pretty ridiculous! Besides, wouldn't you rather them try to further their education or bring a little extra cash into your household? Yeah that's what I thought. Unless they're not contributing anything to the household, don't just kick their asses out. In this economy, it's just impractical. Trust me! They will want to move out eventually.... Hopefully they'll be able to afford it by the time they do.... Cause it's hell when you can't... you can trust me on that too -_-

And I'm sure you'll be the parent celebrating your birthday by yourself in the nursing home.

I'm glad my parents helped me out. I was going to college with far more units than qualifies for full time and working 20 hours a week. Even with that I could barely pay for myself. Life is not always so clear cut as get a job= afford yourself
