music majors rock. everyone who thinks its dumb to be a music major need to back off. i am sorry most of you are miserable stuck behind a desk all day wishing you could have done something more interesting with your life but its YOUR FAULT for thinking that doing something you love and are good at is a bad choice. So yeah, maybe some of us don't have jobs right now, but when we are making money, whether just enough to support a family or enough to buy a mansion, at least we are doing something we will never regret and always know that at least we tried to follow our dreams. there are ALOT of performance jobs out there and as long as you are dedicated to your craft, you can make it. It is much better than being a slave to society. AND too bad you all don't have the talent to make music your career. you are just jealous.
It is better to be poor doing something you love, than be rich doing something you hate. Go all the way, or go home. Subway is just a stepping stone on the path of life. Gotta start somewhere, as long as its not with regret. Forget all these schmoes, I was in band for 8 years and played the trumpet, french horn, baritone, some trombone, a little clarinet, piano, drums, tympani and marching, and loved it. I wish i would have stuck with it, as it is now I haven't picked up a horn in 20 years and am just now getting back into playing trumpet. I still goof off on the drums a little, and dick around on the keyboards. Man, talking about regret, keep on keepin on!
I know how you feel. I majored in Music Theory thinking I would be able to get a job at a score editor or a music theory teacher. But what I really wanted was to be a music therapist. I got my masters in that only to be told that, because I got it in a different country, it's about as useful as a piece of toilet paper. If only I had been told that when I asked my country's association BEFORE I left the country.
u should have got a real degree...
Ok, all you music-major haters need to listen up. Businesses love to hire musicians (no matter what field it's in) because musicians can do anything. They can work alone (like individual practice) or in small groups (like chamber ensembles) or in large groups (like wind ensemble or marching band). They are perfectionists without eating too obsessive. In short: musicians can become whatever their employer needs them to become. Like a jack-of-all-trades. I'm currently double majoring (actually dual degree) in music and math both with teacher certification. Even with all the budget cuts, I'm not worried about finding a job. The best people to hire are people like me. We're willing to work for cheap and we can do just about anything. If Subway has been employing you for 3 years, be thankful! You have many options and any employer would be glad to have you, OP. Good luck out there.
A major in music is cool, but the industry is competitive no matter which way you go.

Quit whining, all of us musicians know the risk we're taking when we try to make it a career.
Go back and get another degree- one with some form of job security. You should have known any art degree wouldn't get you anywhere especially in this economy.
