Get Smart and change your major. That's what I did. I pursued music for a year then figured out that if I didn't want to teach there was a slim to none chance of getting a real job after college.
reading this has just made me feel really discouraged about my decision :( crap.
Message 153: Most kids pursuing a music performance major are looking at classical music of some kind. Broadway is still the minority. There are more schools with classical music programs as opposed to broadway programs.
Katie, it's not set in stone. Freshman year in college is all about exploring. Take some music classes but also take some other classes that you think sound interesting. Who knows, maybe you'll find something you're even more passionate about. It doesn't mean you have to give up on your music.
thanks, I will probably do that
=) No problem. Always my pleasure to help out. I'm a freshman this year so I know exactly how you feel right now. It's like waiting in line for a rollercoaster. You're super excited but scared shitless at the same time. Haha. Just remember, take your time and think it through. Because what you choose to do for the rest of your life is something you need to be passionate about and love...and preferably one with a lot of job opportunities. If you hate what you do, you'll be one very unhappy person. Believe me, my dad's a plumber and he hates it. (Who wouldn't?) And he is one of the biggest assholes on this planet. So explore away my friend! ^_^
I know its not much consolation, but the federal government will hire you with an art degree. That's what most of my friends who studied music ended up doing. The government agencies are looking for people with good grades in -something-. Sadly, the only people I know who ended up actually working in music full time were either married and not the sole breadwinners, or were lucky enough to teach and scrape by.
the contractual partners MercyFML, and ajjas013, hereby agree, being of sound mind, body and soul, to keep a distance of 150 feet between the themselves. now I need you both to sign on the dotted lines, and we need 2 witnesses to sign as well. ------------------ ------------------ ------------------ ------------------
Oh, I'm sorry pdorf. Did I offend you and your precious Tay Swift? Or was it your Ellen Degenerate from Am Idol? There is an old saying : "Jack of all trades, master of none." I'm sure you fit nicely into that category. I'm willing to bet the people who hire you to perform are very knowledgeable about music as well. Did Ellen hire you? I'm glad you are wasting your and your school of music's time by performing in ensembles and majoring in something else. I understand they are desperate to fill the 8th cello chair, or the 4th trumpet, or the 4th clarinet, but who knows. Perhaps you hop around from section to section in a concert. I'm sure you will have a very witty "I PLAY BLAH BLAH GA-WOO ON ME I AM SO SUPER AWESOME." And of course being 18 makes you know everything, particularly about music. I had not one scholarship for my undergrad, but do you hear me crying about it? Did I mention I had to take a class on every instrument as part of my degree requirements? I suppose I don't have to because you are 18 and know everything. Have you even seen a bassoon? Maybe a few more instruments will help you on that Chem final this semester. People like you are perfectly suited to play "My Heart Will Go On" and Pachelbel's cannon all day long. People in the music world need people like you so we don't have to waste our time playing the same stupid music at weddings over and over again. So keep up the good work!
Wow. I'm actually very good at everything I do. Otherwise I wouldn't do it. And FYI, I don't go to a music school. It's actually known for its forensic science program, which is the best in the state. Also the reason I go here. Music is something I'm passionate about, but I don't intend to try and make a living out of it. And actually, I'm a big fan of Chopin, Bach, Beethoven, Gershwin and a lot of other really great composers. I never actually learned to play My Heart Will Go On or Pachelbel's Canon cuz those songs are terrible...and quite frankly, so easy to play it bores me. As a matter of fact, I just got done memorizing the Moonlight Sonata. Yes, the ENTIRE Moonlight Sonata. For a piano competition in Washington. Oh, hey guys. Who was whining about not getting any scholarships? Cuz I sure wasn't. Sounds like you were bud. Boohoo, I had to take a class for every instrument for my undergrad. Uh, HELLO, you picked it. Idiot. Actually, I got very nice talent scholarships for all my instruments and another very good one for my ACT score. Which was a 30 by the way. So sorry you didn't. This school costs about $100,000 for four years. I don't know about you, but I sure don't have that kind of money. My scholarships cover about 95,000 of that. So yea, I perform to pay for the rest so my mom can support my two younger sisters. Gee, my bad. I also don't recall saying that me being 18 meant I knew everything either. Cuz I sure don't and I know that. What's with adults and thinking that all teenagers think they know everything? I'm learning every day. That's why I'm in college. If I thought I knew everything, why would I be here to learn? Hmm? Answer me that. And FYI, I perform for events and functions and things for musicians. I played for my cousin's wedding who happens to be one of the best violinists in the state. But I'm sure he doesn't know a thing about music. And my voice teacher's fundraiser, who has won awards for her singing and compositions. But yea, she probably doesn't know anything about music either. Did I mention the event for my piano teacher? She was recieving an award for being THE best piano teacher in the state. She's also about 70 and has been involved with music pretty much her entire life. But I'm sure you know wayyy more about music than her. Yep. And yes, I know what a bassoon is. My best friend plays one. Not that that matters cuz I sit next to the bassoons. Durr. I'm also in choir. Oh, did you know that the choir has been nominated for an Emmy? And in band, I play flute because I prefer it. And I'm first chair in ALL of the ensembles I'm in. But you know, you're right, I'm probably just a dumb teenager that listens to pop shit. Right. By the way, I don't watch American Idol [you're dumb for calling it Am Idol] because I have better things to do with my time. Buuut I'm done with this back and forth nonsense with you. Honestly, I don't need to explain anything to you. So why don't you get off that high horse of yours because you're not that great mkay? 'Kay now bye. P.S. And no, you didn't offend me. Thanks for asking though. By the way, what exactly does "I PLAY BLAH BLAH GA-WOO ON ME" mean? Sounds like something my 3-year-old cousin would say.
I think MindsEye is angry because for every time he says "there are tons of opportunities for music majors!" there is another story about a music major not being able to find a job, working in fast food and being in debt from those 4 useless years of college. sorry, but people who actually watch the news realize that the world isn't a disney movie where "if you just want it bad enough and major in it, you will have no problems getting a successful career!" not everyone who cant find a job is "one of those stupid people."
look at jared dude, he made it far haha
it appears to me that you all have a jaded idea as to what a music major is. Most people don't go to school to study popular music. the generalizations a few of you have made about music majors not getting jobs is way off. most end up teaching either k-12 or at the collegiate level. I was a music major who didn't even finish his degree and is now making a great living as a professional opera singer.
A job is better than no job in today's economy....people these days complain too much and don't look at the bright side. Not an FML, mate!

Quit whining, all of us musicians know the risk we're taking when we try to make it a career.
Go back and get another degree- one with some form of job security. You should have known any art degree wouldn't get you anywhere especially in this economy.
