She was already well known before the sex tape for being a socialite. She was friends with Paris Hilton (who I believe is famous for absolutely nothing, not Kim) and everyone knows Paris looks like a rat and Kim is hot so it was natural for people to gravitate towards Kim. The tape was a long time ago and she's done plenty of things with her fame since, including charity work. I think people should give Kim a break
