By just-a-fat-cat - This FML is from back in 2016 but it's good stuff - United States - West Bend

Today, I noticed my cat was making a loud wheezing noise when trying to breathe, so I rushed him to the vet's. $250.00 worth of tests later, he's fine. Just really fat. FML

I wouldn't say an obese cat is fine, part of your responsibility as a pet owner is to ensure your cat is healthy and on a proper diet...

Get a laser pointer and have him chase that for 10 minutes, twice a day

Hi All, OP Here. Had to create and account to post this. Before everyone starts claiming animal abuse let me tell you the back story. About 1 1/2 months i adopted him from the local humane society. He weighed in at 32lbs. First thing i did was take him to the vet. He was in decent health except being fat. The vet put him on a very strict very expensive diet food. as well he gets a lot of excersise even though he hates it. laser pointer, cat ropes, etc. I came home yesterday from work and heard him wheezing. concerned i took him to the vet. All the blood work and tests came back fine. No infections or cancer/bad things. The good news he is down to 26lbs though still lots to go. Please before claiming animal abuse think that not everyone is bad. I do actually care about animals. Between everything i have spent around $750 so far. Telling the whole story in 300 words is a bit hard to do. Thanks

What breed is he? I'm amazed a cat got that big and lived, unless he's one of those breeds that make bobcats look normal. 17lbs was the point my oldest shorthair had to be put on diet/exercise plans.

Yah he is a big boy. Species i am not sure. He is a bigger body frame cat with solid black coat. The humane society said he came from a old lady that had to go into a nursing home. Who knows what she was feeding him the past 4 years.

OP---I am so pleased that you took the time to create an account to set all of the judgemental jack holes straight!!! Unfortunately I'll betcha $5 that not one of them writes a retraction or apologizes for saying you abuse your pet. Pathetic.

Awesome, OP! Go you. And thank you for adopting a cat who needed a home, and helping him get healthier. A 6-pound weight loss in a month and a half is a lot -- that was close to 20% of her weight. Too-rapid weight loss can damage a cat's liver. You've probably already covered that with your vet, but if you haven't, you might want to double-check that your vet is okay with the current reduction pace and that you know what to watch for that might raise alarm bells. Again, kudos for helping your kitty!

Better safe than sorry, I'm glad he's not sick or something.

Does your cat happen to be Garfield?

That's what OP gets for feeding him so much lasagna.

How do you not notice your cat is that fat? Fat animals are disgusting. Having a Fjord horse (a breed that can get fat just by thinking about food), I can accept some chub on an animal that's naturally prone to weight gain as long as the owner is putting in the effort to keep it fit or an animal being teated for a medical condition like hypothyroidism, but an animal so fat it wheezes? Gross. I always feel bad for them because I can only imagine how much better they would feel if their owners cared enough about them to keep them at a healthy weight.

Hello, IM OP please read my earlier post just a few comments above yours. Reason i pretty much adopted him was to help him and have a good home. Thanks

put kitty on a diet, make your 250 back on the food you will save. :D

How so? Would you rather them look at a fat cat and say that's the issue when it actually isn't? You run tests to find or eliminate what it could be, they probably realized it was the weight because the cat had no other issue.

My suggestion would be to try to not feed him so much lasagna. Arlene said your cat should only have it about once a week. I know its hard john but still Garfield needs to be in a diet.

All the talk about animal abuse is ******* ridiculous. I had a cat that lived 19+ years and for a good part of that time he was overweight.

Lmao, my cat is huge for a female cat. She was maybe 7 lbs before she got spayed and now she's probably 13. she's really tall though so idk
