But, that doesn't even make sense. wouldn't they know your age from your job application? That's a pretty stupid policy they have there.
don't worry OP, thats major fault in their system that they need to sort out. Happy job hunting
the part that makes sense Is that some places do have age requirements ( liquor stores etc) and somehow your age was missed when being hired . But not asking your age during the initial interview process does sound sketchy . maybe it's a good thing your not working there OP!
It is illegal to ask someone's age during an interview. They can ask if the candidate is at least a certain age based on some restrictions (working in a bar, selling firearms) but that's it. Otherwise they can run into the whole ageism issue.
Honestly OP, if the job didn't ask your age you probably shouldn't be working there.
Damn. I'm a little worried about this comment section. Why is every comment thumbs down so many times?!
Perhaps people fighting for the top comment? A bit petty though lol
Some people only care about likes, so they thumbs down everyone else's comments to try and get top answer.
That's what I thought! All valid comments and they all have down votes
Sounds like they've got some issues with communicating job requirements- they should have either asked if you met the age requirement, or given you a copy of requirements with your application. That said, they must sell alcohol or something similar on the premises. Still, someone in management obviously screwed up and is covering their ass- which unfortunately for you OP, means you got fired.
Seems to be a pretty common thing, unfortunately... I had a similar situation once. My first day on the job they told me I would be required to work until 11pm at least twice a week, and there was just no possible way I could do that at the time. When I told them that, they said I either had to find a way to make it possible, or I could quit. So I ended up being forced to quit after my first day. They had never mentioned that being a requirement at any point before they hired me, and no one had ever asked for my availability before that first day. If hiring managers could all just get their shit together and actually ask the questions that they need to know- like availability and age requirements- then things like this could be avoided. And people like OP and myself wouldn't have to go through all the bullshit of the hiring process just to be fired on day one over a simple detail that could easily have been discussed in the interview or even right in the application.
They are allowed to at least know if you are of age for the job. They just can't ask specifically how old you are.
You're right, they can ask if you're 21 or older without asking your age. I'm not sure why someone thumbed you down.

What kind of job isn't required to know your age?
What company was it? Seems a little strange.
