Maybe it had some sort of special meaning to them? Like they rarely get to splurge on specific things, or it was a gift, or even something passed down to them? It could also be the straw that broke the camel's back. Like a snowball where thing after thing just kept building up until something rather inconsequential cause the burst. The thing that a person says they're crying about isn't always actually what they're crying about. You could say that you were still able to lend an ear, even if it didn't seem much to you.
Was the pan the close friend, or did her close friend murder the pan? In any case, it's shitty eggs from now on. A great pan can never be replaced at any price.
