You should have been more supportive of him and encourage him to reattempt his former failures to turn them into a success, preferably at a later time. Well, aren't we supposed to support and encourage our fellow persons to succeed in everything they try?

Maybe it's one of those jokes that people tell to see their reaction. :) Like looking at guns/fiddling with them at Walmart or some store and then asking an employee where the anti-depressants are... to see their reaction, it's one of those jokes!
