Today, I agreed to stay a week with my wife's parents, who she told me were traditional Japanese. I was prepared for having to wear Japanese clothes while in the house, but I wasn't prepared for communal bathing in the same huge bath with her father, grandfather, uncle and two brothers. FML

It's a way to learn their culture. While it may have been a surprise, her family might welcome you even more for being part of their custom.

I'm for culture and all but how sanitary is that, I wouldn't

it's actually pretty sanitary considering in japanese bathing you're supposed to soap and shower off before you even get in the bath. Baths are for soaking and relaxing basically, and can be considered a social event to an extent (a bunch of friends getting together, chilling, and talking about stuff). Its not really that different from what people do at Country Clubs where you all sit naked in a sauna room. that said, while i completely understand it, it is not a situation i would be comfortable in, and should i ever live in japan, which will only happen if i have a very large sum saved up, my facilities will be built generally to American standards.

THAT'S JAPANESE TRADITION!!!?? Oh no. . .

If your penis got hard then that means your gay

I've been to Japan before and if you're talking about the bathing hot tubs, those are pretty cool and you go by yourself! There are also the hot springs you go in with everyone. Both you cannot wear clothes but they are fairly clean because you bathe before entering.

it's your wife how the hell did you not something about something so common in Japan

Think of it as like a hot tub with soap.
