YDI, you never personally return a wallet because if money is missing you are the automatic suspect. You either drop it in a mailbox(the post office will mail the wallet back to them) or take it to the nearest police station
Say that if you stole the money, why would you return the wallet to the owner? That'll probably get the cops off your back.
That asshole is lucky OP even gave it back.

I would tell him go ahead and file charges- he didn't SEE you take the money, which you didn't, and he can't prove it. End of story. This is why people don't do nice things anymore- cuz it bites them in the butt.
