Life ain't a Disney movie

By Phil - 06/01/2025 20:00 - Canada

Today, I tried to pet a squirrel because it looked friendly. It did not feel the same way. Now I’m googling things like, "Can squirrels give you rabies?" FML

All mammals can carry rabies, but it's pretty rare in most of them. You're most likely to get it from bats, raccoons, or dogs. Still, consult a doctor if you're not sure. Rabies is a horrible way to die, and there is basically zero chance of survival if you don't get the shot soon after exposure, so take preventative measures if there's any chance you've been exposed.

The answer is "yes". And if there's even the remotest chance (and there is with *any* mammal bite), you should go get an emergency vaccination ASAP. It'll suck, but if the rabies finishes its dormant phase before you get vaccinated, you *will* 100% die. There will be no saving you. And it will be an awful, agonizing death the entire time. So please ****please**** get yourself to a hospital and explain what happened as soon as possible. And I do mean *ASAP*, not "Eh, I'll go on the weekend, I'm busy". Go. Now.

As long as it was a tree squirrel and not a ground squirrel or chipmunk you're okay. tree squirrels are one of the very few species that are actually immune to rabies.
