Ahh, that sucks! :( You should have just told him lol...he wouldn't be mad. But it's not as bad as when my grandfather (of blessed memory) had dementia and asked me and my cousin where his brother was. His brother was shot and killed many years ago when the two of them were exiting the hardware store they co-owned. He died in front of my grandfather. And the thief was after whatever he'd had in his bag, which turned out to just be gym clothes. He was never caught. Little 13-year-old me had to explain all that to him...and watch his face fall as he tried to remember it. It wasn't fun :(.
You should've told him or try #9's advice. #12 Aww that's so sad. :(
how hard is it to just tell him
I think it was very nice of you to not correct him. Older people get corrected all the time and it makes them very frustrated. This wasn't a life or death matter, so no real harm was done, except for you had to pretend about a subject that made you a little uncomfortable. That is worth putting up with to make your gramdfathet feel good about himself.
My grandmother had Alzheimer's, and for a few years, she would constantly ask me what grade I was in, even into college. It was both endearing and depressing.
Just tell him you dumbass. YDI.
