New fangled technology

By notacashier - This FML is from back in 2014 but it's good stuff - United States - Brooklyn

Today, I used the self-checkout for the first time. I didn't see a slot for bills, so I tried to put them in the coin slot for a solid three minutes. There was a huge line behind me, silently judging. FML

YDI Wouldn't you know the difference between the size between a bill and a coin.

That's when you drop everything and leave without saying a word.

I work as a cashier and sometimes have to monitor self check out and the number of idiots we get trying to do things themselves is astounding. They take so much time trying to do it too, when it would have been faster to stand in line and get checked out, or they come through with giant items that need to be scanned with a gun scanner or items that need to be typed in individually. In both circumstances they should have just gone through a normal cash right next to me, but no; they have to create a line and cause me problems as I try to check them through a self checkout while trying to monitor the other self checkouts too. If you don't know what you're doing, go to a cashier: we know how to do our jobs and we can do it a lot faster than you.

Well that was put across rudely. Get of your high horses, every one has days like that...

You'd be surprised at how far reading the directions on the machines goes.

41-- self checkout gives the option of manually entering the UPC code. Also, I hate using cashiers because they always bag my stuff wrong. I separate everything out and they still mix it up. I don't want my meat in with my fruits and veggies. I definitely do not want my cleaning supplies with my food. Plus, cashiers have attitudes! I am guessing Walmart no longer teaches the ten foot rule.

And in more to the point for op, you'd think that after the first failed attempt OP would have tried other options, rather than the same thing for 3 straight minutes.

Clearly you've never been to the self checkouts at Home Depot. There are no options for large items and there are none for typing things in (nuts bolts screws wood). these things gave to be done by a cashier and still people insist on self checkout.

At the place I work at there is an option for typing in the upc. Unfortunately when you push it, it calls the attendant so they have to do it for you.

kingdomgirl94 29

exactly, there for there is no available option for doing it yourself, only calling the attendant away from monitoring things.

55, you know you can bag your own stuff while the cashier scans the items yes? That's the fastest way to go through a manned checkout. Alternatively, you could just tell them not to mix your items up.

Sooo many comments on this one comment.... guys we get it... it's easier to go through a cashier than self checkout if you don't know what you're doing.

I use to be a cashier and I use to pack people's groceries the way I liked mine packed. Meat on it's own or with other meat, cleaning items together, fruit and veg together, etc. It drove me insane when I went to other shops to do my groceries and I would sort things out onto the belt how I wanted them bagged and yet 95% of the time my cold stuff would end up in the same bag as cleaning products. Or they would fill the bag up with cans/bottles and the bag would break. Any cashier with common sense would know how to pack the bags correctly, it's also one of the first things we are taught in training, so if they don't have common sense they're told how to do it. The only time I ever mixed things in bags like bread and milk in a bag or cleaning products with food is when a customer said to me "just put them all in the one bag" or "they're fine together". Even before I was a cashier I never understood why people packed the bags so horribly

@55 Walmart still follows the ten foot rule. I got hired last year and they trained it hard into me. Yes, cashiers do have attitude problems, and I have seen it myself. I've been grumpy at work, but the happier my customers are, the happier I get. I can't be happy all the time though. :( Cashiers do deal with a bunch of ignorant and rude customers. Try being in customer service at a place that is well known for the horrendous customers. As for bagging.... It's mainly laziness for some cashiers. The ones I work with are decent about how they bag, and sometimes I will mix the stuff. The more organized a customer is, the better I bag. The more mixed up the customer is, the harder it is for me to bag according to standards. I've seen horrible organization on the belt and it's annoying to put everything together.... stray cans in the back of the chemicals? yeah. Done venting. Lol. I got off topic a little.

You think soneone would say!!.Was anyone laughing after you realised

I don't think they'd be laughing. Probably sighing or groaning very impatiently, rather than going to a different lane.

I'd say the most reasonable reaction in such a situation is to wiggle your ass at the people behind you.

That's ok OP. We learn from our mistake. I've done something similar when I used the self-checkout for the first time. Unlike yours, I was trying to put it in where the receipt is suppose to come out haha

YDI. I understand if you couldn't find the bill slot , but really? a COIN slot. For coins ONLY. Common sense would tell you to ask someone who works there, where the bill slot is.

Well, at the same time it's their fault for just watching and not giving a helping hand!

Wrong 23. Attendants are usually busy helping other people or fixing the machines and won't come to your aid unless you ask (or set off an alarm). I know, I am one.

#18 is trying to correct #1. As for you #18, I'm not trying to make you feel bad at all, but use the reply button next time :)
