If your kids live with you, tell them it’s theirs to take care of… If your kids don’t live with you, insist that one of them take the dog… OP, I have the feeling that you weren’t exactly open with how you felt about the now deceased dog. I understand, but when you don’t communicate your feelings, sometimes people come to the wrong conclusions.
There are websites out there to help people rehome pets. I had to rehome my dogs last year, and all of them went to good homes. Do what you have to do, but that is an option.
If it is a puppy it should be easy to find him a new home. Talking to your kids is another matter.
