Nosferatu

Today, at the restaurant I work at, I gave a man back his change and told him to enjoy the sunny day. He replied by dramatically saying that the sun was his mortal enemy. Thinking he was joking, I asked him if he was a vampire. Turns out he has skin cancer. FML

Maybe if he talked like a regular person instead of like a vampire

he actually said mortal enemy? Dude, don't sweat it, if he's talking like that he's just begging for such comments.

Aw, but you don't deserve that...that was a funny comment to make and it wasn't like he was shying away from the topic. I can see my dad saying the same thing (but not knowing that he had skin cancer).

people like that really bite. they just HAVE to bring attention to the fact that they have cancer and that somehow you should have divined it. you were just being friendly and he had to turn it into a sympathy fish. cancer is no fun. it just makes itworse to have a bad attitude.

As long as he has a sense of humour. It's not like your conversation had a sombre tone to it.

Yeah but it wasn't your fault. You weren't to know. And while it's sad he has skin cancer, he shouldnt say things like that, expecting ppl to guess that he is sick.

That's funny, because my old professor said something exactly like that when we begged him to have class outside one day. And he had skin cancer too. What a weird guy - wonder if we have the same person?

And Annabelle_Lee - it's great that you get along so well with the idea of death, but some people are uncertain about it because it's... well... a very uncertain thing to talk about. People who are unsure about the afterlife and such sometimes get scared when it approaches. And out of curiosity, have you ever had a family member or someone close to you die? Some people get upset when someone they love leaves them, in this case possibly forever. Or their death reminds them of the possibility of theirs, which brings up the point I most previously mentioned. I also think you're a bit confused on the difference between "natural course" and "survival of the fittest". It's a common misnomer, anyway. Survival of the fittest doesn't mean that nature takes out all that cannot survive due to age, disability, etc. It has to due with reproduction. For example, if a genius marathon runner has no children, and a nearly-retarded obese man has many children, guess which one is "fit?" Although one would hope it is the other way around, the notion of "survival of the fittest" is more complicated than that. Not everyone is a Darwinist - I doubt even he would fail to blink a little when someone loved by him would die. I'm not necessarily criticizing your viewpoint, because your statements are your opinion. I'm just rebutting to show you why others might take death and dying less lightly.
