On my TV, when you mute it it goes quiet, of course. If then you press the volume button up, it unmutes the sound and turns up the volume from the previous setting before you muted it… I have a suspicion that OP’s TV was loud, then muted at some point with the mute button, then OP turned up with the volume button which both unmuted the sound and turned up the volume from the volume setting where it was before it was muted… It can be confusing, but at least on my TV, when muted there is a little indication onscreen that the sound is muted as opposed to turned all the way down in volume. Unmuting the TV will cause it to immediately go back to the prior level… OP, shit happens sometimes even when you are careful. Learn to use your TV and it’s remote and you will have less problems like this. You could have simply pushed the mute button or immediately turned the volume down if you knew the layout of your TV remote and what the buttons do. The mute button is quicker, but as soon as you touch either the mute button again or adjust the volume it would unmute at the previous sound level… And of course it adds an additional level of complexity if you have a sound bar or hifi system that you are using for sound. That can also lead to such results as you flail around trying to get the sound on. Unfortunately almost every “improvement” or set of options inevitably results in the possibility of user confusion. But here is a clue - If the sound setting is at the normal level but there is no sound, don’t turn up the volume, there is another issue going on… OP, don’t feel too bad, even smart people have “brain farts” sometimes. I remember when the engineer in the next office over had his headphones on, but they weren’t plugged in. His speakers could be heard though his headphones and our shared wall.

Could be worse, at least the volume up button didn’t get stuck and go to max volume while you were watching **** 😆😆
