Rules are meant to be broken

Today, I got an email from a professor saying he was going to fail me for missing the allotted absences, which is school policy. I pointed out I was in the hospital for two weeks with a life threatening illness and that he even came to visit me. He told me, "Rules are rules." FML

I've had similar issues (I miss a lot of class due to illness as well). Go to the dean of students or if your school has a Student Disability Center or something. Rules may be rules but you cannot penalize a student for something that's beyond their control, it's illegal.

Have you tried talking to the dean of students? If anything, you could try to get the class marked as incomplete or dropped (or stricken from the record entirely).

College = money sucking parasite. #33 = hero and makes me jealous that i don't have any cool professors like that. A lot of bitter people in this world. Gotta say **** 'em and move on. Good luck OP.

A few of you people seem to have not heard of excused absences. I'm fairly certain that hospitalization with a severe illness would count as one of these. Granted, it's a school-by-school basis, but at the school I went to, "If the absence is excused, the instructor must either provide the student an opportunity to make up any quiz, exam or other graded activities or provide a satisfactory alternative to be completed within 30 calendar days from the last day of the absence." Additionally, "If the student is absent for excused reasons for an unreasonable amount of time during the semester, the academic dean of the student’s college may consider giving the student a grade of W during the semester enrolled or a NG (no grade) following posting of final grades." So no, you can't be failed for having too many absences, and you must be given a chance to make up excused work, at least at this school (and I imagine most schools are like this as well) So #10, #14, #43, #48, #51, #57, #65, #66, #69, #80, and #84, while you range from misinformed to asshole, you're all very likely wrong. It's an excused absence that was out of his hands, and most schools have policies to allow students to either make up work or prevent this from hurting their GPA. I have a feeling this prof is making up his own "school policies."

Call the dean, file a law suit and see what happens.

I've got a professor pulling the same shit on me right now.

that's unfair. call your dean of students.

someone should have called and told the school that you were in the hospital. if you didnt, thats your fault. im sorry that you were sick, i really do feel bad for you, but you should have told someone about this sooner. and if you did, im sure this teacher would have known. you do need to talk to someone higher above him because thats shitty. but, i really dont think this guy would have handled it like that.

hey, why are you worried about a stupid class if you have a life threatening illness? if you die, you would flunk out anyway!

you should be happy that you're not pushing up daisy's and just retake the class, no more crying, time to be a big boy XD
