Today, and for the past 13 months, I've been living in the States. I've been called a Nazi, asked if we have electricity in Germany, and been made fun of the way I speak with my "German accent", the list goes on. I'm not even German, I'm Danish. FML

Laugh at their ignorance. Or agree with their Nazi joke and let them know they could be next.

I guess, when you moved to America, you did Nazi that coming.

I'm sorry. We may be an industrialized nation but sometimes the USA comes across as a very backwards and UNcivilized place. Please don't take the remarks of some to be the beliefs of us all.

Not all Americans are dumb. It's just the ones that everyone sees that make us as a whole look bad. I'm sorry the OP has had this experience. It's a shame.

Just go on about Canada-stuff, and when they try to correct you, you just say "same same"

I really hate it when people bash on America. Not all the stereotypes you hear are true.

I'm Dutch and I've been living in the USA for about 4 months now. I can relate to the OP. Besides people thinking that I am a Nazi because of my Dutch accent, I've met people who do not know the Netherlands is a country. I've met people who asked me how Copenhagen is, not knowing that Copenhagen is Danish. People have asked me to speak on behalf of the entirety of Europe or the European Union. I quote: "Hey, how does Europe view Israel???" When people figure out that we do not speak English in the Netherlands, they have asked me whether I am bilingual. When I confirmed I was (Dutch and English), one girl said that that was so cool and that she was bilingual as well, because she had 3 years of Spanish in high school... I've heard people saying that they would move to Australia/Canada/Europe if Barack Obama would be re-elected. Newsflash: all of these countries are a lot more left-winged than the USA is. When I told someone that Australia has a female, atheist and left-winged prime minister (and not a president has he thought), he didn't believe me and said: "The USA is the most socialist country in the world, apart from China and Russia!" I guess I should be glad he knew that the Soviet Union is no more... I've met someone asking me "what Merkel, Berlusconi, Sarkozy, Cameron and Hollande was." I've met someone who overheard me speaking Dutch to a friend and claimed that my "Italian was really good." I still don't know what was going on there. For those who do not know this: Dutch and Italian are two very, very different languages. Dutch is of Germanic descent and Italian of Roman descent. Someone told me I misspelled color, honor and favor, because I spelled colour, honour and favour. When I told him I was taught British spelling, he looked at me as if I was crazy and informed me that there is no such thing as British spelling, because they also speak English there and that "As I am an American, I speak English and I'm telling you: you misspelled it. British doesn't exist: they speak English there!" That said, I have also met incredibly smart people here, who know who is who in the international community. I've met the most lovely people here and some friendships I have made here will - I hope - last my entire life.

Im from denmark, and i live in England. One of the first conversations i had were with a girl who thought we all lived in trees, and that we had no roads, cars or hospitals... Englishmen are not that bright either!

I went to Billings, ND this summer and the receptionist at the hotel asked us if we have internet in Canada *facepalm* I mean, I can understand knowing nothing about a country that's far away, like Russia or something. But Billings is less than 5 hours from from the Canadian border.
