Normally, people in the choir know how to sing and carry a tune. It's because they care that they encourage you to further your talents. And it's capital G!

He might be saying that you can't sing. I've had a friend that can't sing even after he has voice lessons so the guy might think you have potential.

Musical leaders/directors are always very excited about their pupils taking lessons and getting better. It doesn't mean you're a bad singer, but the possibility isn't totally excluded.
