Smooth criminal

Today, I walked into Best Buy to buy a 42" widescreen TV I'd been saving up for many months. As I walked in, a man stopped me and handed me my wallet that I'd accidentally dropped. I thanked him. Five minutes later at the checkout, I opened up my wallet to realize it was empty. He had stolen everything. FML

So after losing your wallet you waited until you were at the cashier to check if all your cash was still there??

Uh... do you mean you were carrying all that money in cash? If it was a card then it wouldn't matter, he couldn't use it...

You know guys, it's a very common pickpocket thing to steal the wallet, take the money and return it, saying that it'd fallen. That's because whenyou find your wallet on teh floor the instant you pick it up you open it to see if the cash is still there. if some nice guy gives it back to you after you dropped it, you're not suspicious and therefore don't check instantly. This gives them time to run away

YDI for carrying that much cash on you and for not checking your wallet when the stranger handed it to you, idiot. Honestly, if any idiot carries more than $100USD on them, then they deserved to be robbed or pick pocketed. Credit/debit cards exist, as well as cheques.

I don't know how it works in the US but over here if you have a bad credit history or something you don't always get given a debit card, and obviously if that's the case you can't get a credit card, so cash may have been the only option. So why not all calm down & get off your high horses eh?

That totally sucks! Good thing they have 18mos financing...

@32 really. i just went shopping with $200 USD on me. so i deserved to be robbed or pick pocketed. the only ones who deserve that are ones with no common sense. the ones who can't seem to hold onto their wallets properly. @33 it's the same thing here. if you have bad credit you can't get anything so you need to carry cash on them. YDI for not having a better hold on your wallet and for not checking it right away. what would ever posses you to check your wallet five minutes after the fact??

See cash is better because it cant be traced

I find it silly that something that could really screw this guys life is getting a lot of YDI, while whiney little teenagers post something omigosh like today my hair was frizzy FML and it get's agreed with what's wrong with you people

That's a brave thief. By handing you back the wallet part, he was taking a risk you'd notice what had been removed, and be able to identify him. Had he just taken the whole thing, he'd have a much better chance to get away with it. He still won, though, because you were dumb and didn't look inside your wallet. Hopefully you didn't have a lot of cash, because that can't be replaced, but I disagree with everyone else who says it doesn't matter with cards. It's still a pain in the ass to get them canceled and resent, and you don't have them for a while in the meantime. And IDs and such can cost money, and far too much time, to replace. And you have to have other IDs to prove that it's you. (Passport? Birth certificate? SS card? Hope you have some of those in a safe deposit box.)

we all make mistakes from time to time - remember his face well, because you just might see him again.... assuming your wallet wasn't already empty when he found it :/

YDI for carrying so much cash. Keep your money secure. There's a reason why most people don't carry a pile of cash. Especially if it's all they got! I bought a new 42" Plasma for $750. :)
