Today, me and some friends had home-made burgers for lunch. The guy who did the cooking later insisted that spitting in a frying pan is a perfectly acceptable way of guessing the right time to add the oil. FML

Or alternatively, he could test the pan by putting one drop of oil. Mind = blown.

As bad as it sounds the pan will be hot enough to kill the germs. If it's hot enough to cook the burgers, and they are safe to eat, germs from spit gone.

Flick a little water and see if it dances is my solution...but with a hot pan the germs should die...but still something more sanitary is a excellent idea...

Another way of seeing if the oil is hot enough is by putting a single popcorn kernel in the pan. When it pops, the oil is hot enough!

Totally acceptable way of testing for the oil. Better than cold water or hot you'd have to get the right temperature of the water to see.

Acceptable is right, the preferred method is using a loogie. Some cooking secrets should be kept secret.

From a scientific aside, the heat from the pan would have killed the germs etc. From a moral side, don't get him to prepare any more meals.
