Why doesn't your company have transit insurance? Every place I have worked for that requires employees to take money to a bank etc., they have had transit insurance so that if things like this do happen, the company is covered for the loss
I've always lived in a 'right to work' state (meaning no contracts, no obligations for either party). That just seems bullshit, to me. Even if you pay that back you're likely to be held under suspicion- do you even have guarantee of keeping your position? And this may be a silly question, but why would you have company money in your personal handbag?
I signed it out, meaning it was my resonsibility. I got mugged and lost the lot plus some of my own money, my credit card and my mobile phone. It has been reported to the police but my own insurance is refusing to pay the £250 because it's work's and work insurance is refusing to pay because I signed it out so it's my responsibility. At least I live in the UK where my rights are protected and I still have a job. And my employer is being pretty cool about it and taking a fraction at a time from my salary. Hope this clarifies things!
where can I get a vacation for 250?

If you are not covered under the business insurance then you should have refused to hold/transport it. Or least got your boss to sign you are not responsible if it's lost to replace it if he still wanted you to take the risk
Truly an FML, but the second you signed it out, it became your responsibility. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any recourse for you but to suck it up and pay it back to your company. If there is a next time, keep a better eye on your belongings, ask for an escort, or if you're no longer comfortable and there is someone else that can do it have them be the one to handle the money.
