At least you got a good workout :)
Entering abandoned mines is extremely dangerous. not only do you have to worry about collapses or falling but because they aren't naturally ventilated the air quality can be very poor and potentially kill you in a very short period of time.
OP old mines are extremely dangerous. Its idiots like your family that go and explore them and get hurt, thats why it was blocked off
Abandoned things are abandoned for a reason. Lucky it was blocked off, could have been dangerous.
Once my mom took us on a family trip to "an arboretum." She said the map said it's just a bit up the path. So we hop out of the car in our casual summer clothes and flip flops. And walked. And walked. And walked. I don't know how far we went before we finally realized that whatever arboretum she thought she'd read about, was either non-existent or not there. We returned to the car, with many a blister and literally the largest number of mosquito bites I have ever gotten at once. So I feel your pain!
Let's go on a family trip that requires walking.. in flip flops! Although saying that I did once walk across a rocky island for half an hour in high heels..
It's abandoned and blocked off for a reason. Next time, look for something less dangerous.
What an adventure? Are you going to do it again?
Google map wins again lol. anytime I here small hike I Google it to see what a small hike
Abandoned mining sites are always closed off. Did you think they'd take the risk of having to pay for your funeral after you would have inevitably slipped and broken your neck on the way down? I've been to a mine once, on a supervised tour, and those treacherous steep trails you had to walk to get to the mine are nothing compared to an an actual mine. They are incredibly dangerous, and you completely deserved to be thwarted by the proper safety precautions meant to keep reckless people like you out.
Abandoned mine = probably dangerous. Thank your lucky stars you couldn't get in ! At least you got some exercise out of it !

How was the trip back down?
I didn't realize people actually thought they would leave a gold mine open. It's dangerous enough as it is when people work there. Why would it be any different decades later?
