Take a hike

By bummed - 14/04/2014 01:57

Today, my family and I went on a hike to a local abandoned gold mine, with the hopes of being able to explore the caves. What we didn't expect was four miles of treacherous, rocky, near vertical trails that led to the mine. Once we finally got there, exhausted, it was blocked off for safety reasons. FML

I didn't realize people actually thought they would leave a gold mine open. It's dangerous enough as it is when people work there. Why would it be any different decades later?

Why is this bad? The trip still sounds outstandingly fun, and you still could have gone in

Why do the words, no shit, cross my mind when I read this. What did you expect it's an OLD, ABANDONED mine and like most places they are usually barricaded.

Most abandoned sites are not safe and are blocked off for safety reasons. They have a number abandoned sites here in NJ that are supposedly haunted and kids are surprised when they get arrested for trespassing in an area that was potentially dangerous. I'm wondering how this was a surprise or a good idea? OP you are lucky you didn't go in and get hurt or possibly arrested.

Those blockades at the mine may damn well have saved your life. What happens if you get lost or injured inside a mine?

It was abandoned for a reason. It's dangerous enough when open, let alone after being abandoned. It might have been closed due to structural problems or gas leaks for all you know. What made you think it was a good idea to take your family there as well? If you got lost, nobody would even know where to look for you.

And you guys thought going into an abandoned mine was a good idea because? That was pretty dumb on your part.

Probably a good thing that happened. Abandoned mines are notoriously unsafe since there's no one left to maintain the supports. Also, gold mines tend to have toxic chemicals stored in them.

what gave you the idea that they would actually let you in to the mine OP? YDI

why would you expect abandoned mines not to be blocked off?
