Today, my laptop has its own likes and dislikes. The cooler keeps spinning crazily, causing loud annoying noise when I use the laptop at my parent's house, and functions perfectly silent at my place. Careful inspection proved full working order. What's going on? FML

Fans spinning would indicate a rise in temperature. What are you setting it on your house vs parents? I did have one laptop that a lady brought it because it kept freezing. I ran stress tests hard drive tests mem tests to the 9th degree could not get it to lock up. I tried having the customer come back in and step me through the last thing she did when it froze last (She said it was random no specific process or app etc..) She walked in store and around the corner near her laptop and it froze! I had it for 2 weeks running constantly with zero issues!! Crazy! She left and I rebooted and the laptop went happily along. I think she replaced it. But I bet yours is an environmental issue.

Yeah, likely the surface it’s on at your parents. Something like a carpet might not give it enough airflow.

Either you're setting it down on a cushioned\carpeted surface--in which case, stop that--or you need a priest.

Computers are evil and out to get you.

I find that sometimes different types of devices on the network effect performance. when I have Linux only devices running on a network or Mac only network vs windows + Linux + Mac + android, the mixed network fans turn on more and things generally run poorly with devices on the mixed network. when Samba actually sees a windows device on the network it goes a little nuts, when there is nothing to talk to things run more smoothly, as an example
