For the record, there's other socialogical considerations here. I will not stop to help a very pretty girl because it can be awkward, especially if there's a chance I won't know how to help her. I also have a girlfriend that it might bother. There's also the possibility of an overreacting boyfriend showing up at the scene. Also there's an intimidation factor present. If she needed a tire change, and the tire and jack was visible, then MAYBE.. I will, and have, helped out many unattractive women, and in fact, once gave one a ride to their home three miles out of my way when I determined I couldn't help them with their car and they needed to get home. Mainly, I stopped just because someone needed help, but I will never stop if they don't appear to be "approachable." Attractiveness is entirely in the eye of the beholder. Now, if the other girl acted/looked like a **** or something, I'm sure men flocked to her aid. Many women won't stop at all, except to offer to let them use their phone or something. That's partially because a lot of women figure they can't otherwise help-out, and because some are just catty like that. Also, the attitude of the stranded person has to match.. If you are looking to flag someone down and appear anxious and gesturing to motorists, you'll get better results than just sitting at (or in) your car or something, where folks figure you've probably already called for a tow truck or something. The type of car makes a dfifference too, as does the condition it appears to be in. I'll stop for a junker because someone's obviously trying to get by.. but if a BMW breaks down, they're on their own. Don't sweat it.. unless the teacher explained you were "the ugly girl", you weren't.. there may be other factors you were selected for, like outgoing versus non-outgoing personallities. Personally, I don't think a science teacher would do that, because "attractiveness" is purely subjective and useless as a variable in an experiment, unless efforts were made to make a subject distinctly unattractive. (ie- covered you in mud first or something.)
The bystander affect is also a major contributor to the fact that nobody stopped to help. Everyone thinks someone else will come along to help, and consequently, nobody does. It's one of the strange ways in which the human psyche works.
Beauty is in the eye(s) of the beholder(s). It's not that bad.
In the end, this experiment proved that there is no true altruism. All we do has selfish causes and, you know what, that's OK. The drivers stopped for someone who could give them something back, so to speak.
LOLLLL totally doing that for my science fair... JK
If only you knew the difference between effect (noun) and affect (verb).
Actually, that is a perfectly fine usage of the verb "to effect". Next time you feel like correcting someone, make sure you actually know what you're talking about.
There are other cofounds. People may have somewhere to be, others may be wary about helping a random stranger since, I'm not saying you are, they could be a killer or creep.
Awwww :(
Kick him in the balls and say you're testing to see how authority figures react to disrespect from students.
