Test subject

Today, I signed up for a psych experiment. I was a damsel in distress on the side of the highway, but no one stopped. Back at the lab, another participant said a half-dozen people helped her. The professor was testing how attractiveness affects altruism. I was the unattractive subject. FML

I wouldn't even say this is an FML, necessarily. I pass people that are broken down on the side of the highway all the time without giving them a second thought... OR a second glance. So attractive or not, you're not getting helped by me. And with millions of people on this country, I'm entirely positive that I'm not the only one.

This is so easy to figure out. People didn't help you because you weren't wearing a Clay Aiken t-shirt. No attraction + No Clay Aiken t-shirt = No chance.

I bet the real experiment was about how people react to being told they were considered uglier or less successful in evoking altruism than someone else.

No, they would have had to tell her even that. You have to fully debrief participants after they complete the experiment.

I guess that's why they call it a "psych" experiment

I would have stopped to help you no matter how ugly you are.

I agree with #64. I'm sorry, that sucks. With that said, I find it hard to believe you weren't informed of what you were doing until after the experiment was completed.

I've heard of many experiments for which the participants were not told what exactly they were testing, though usually it's because the experiment is a psychological one. I imagine the professor would have a hard time finding subjects if he told them he needed them because they're unattractive, even if they're getting paid. And if you were standing on the side of the road thinking about the fact that you're there because you're ugly, you could present an air defeat or nervousness which would affect your chances of people offering to help and so skew the results. But what an awful realization for the OP. That's horrible. ):

Thats unethical. You should withdrawl your data. They are supposed to brief you on what you are doing.

Don't worry. At least you won't get raped. (;
