Today, I waited on a gentleman and his lady friend at my restaurant. They ordered some of the most expensive items on the menu, and I thought I'd get a nice tip. Instead, he tipped me a scrap of paper, containing a drawing of a cock jizzing on a caricature of my face, and the word "Thanks." FML

It may put me in a bad mood when a customer doesn't tip but it never ruins my day. I have dealt with complete assholes but filing a false police report is crossing the line.

fyl.its a bad time to be a waiter/waitress in this economy because you have people who want to eat the same way they use to but lack the funds so tips seriously are rarely what they should be

In America waitstaff who receive tips are not required to be paid minimum wage. Without tips they might be making $3 an hour. Minimum wage isn't even a living wage, a fraction of that is worse.

In America if you don't get tips you can't live. I live in Australia and it is not our custom to tip but if the service is good I usually do as it is my way of saying thank you without the depraved drawing.

I am sure that in England your servers get paid more too. I am a server/bartender and we get paid below minimum wage. Our checks our very low if anything at all. We live off of our tips.

In England normally waitresses get paid minimum wage, which is more than servers in America get but it's still not a lot of money, especially when minimum wage is different for different ages; under 18's get paid less than under 21's, under 21's get paid less than over 21's. Comparing the job of being a waitress to working in a shop, waitressing is definitely more work but usually for less pay because we are told we should get tips on top of that! You're not expected here to tip as much as in America but still, if every single table left even a tip as small as £2-3 it would make my job so much more worthwhile!

In America, waiters are not paid adequately. The lowest income jobs below the poverty line are food services here. It's expected that 20% for decent service. More if outstanding. No tip is like a huge **** you to service staff.
