why? they paid for their meal including tax and the added tip thats put on the bill as well. the server gets paid a wage. why should they get extra? do you tip doctors, bag boys, checkout staff? waiters are one of the only jobs that get tipped and mostly only in america

Because waitstaff who receive tips are not paid minimum wage, but rather something far less (2.15 an hour some places) while being expected to make that up in gratuities. The laws about wages leave people who make money on tips ******, resulting in a poverty rate three times higher than the average.

Not leaving a tip is fine if you felt the service was bad. However that no reason to be a jerk about it.

43-- if tips are not equal to federal minimum wage, the employer must pay the employee the difference. So, even if the employee does not make enough in tips, they are still making federal minimum wage.

50- Believe me, if your employer is constantly making up your difference in tips, they're not going to want to keep you on staff, or they are going to give you as few hours as they possibly can, because you're costing them money. Not to mention, you still have to tip out the runner, host/hostess, and anyone else involved, so when people run up a big bill and don't tip, or dine and dash, it costs you money too. If the service was bad enough not to tip at all, it was bad enough that you need to contact management.

39 - You're absolutely ridiculous. Doctors make over 100k a year, they don't need tips. And yes, I do tip "bag boys." I also tip my tattoo artist, delivery drivers, and other people who provide me with a service who do not get compensated enough by their wage to actually LIVE on.

39, if the check has a tip added to it already (automatic gratuity) then fine, don't tip them extra. But many restaurants are doing away with automatic gratuity. If she gave them horrible service then I understand them not wanting to tip. If she gave great service then she deserves a tip.

Restaurants typically only automatically add gratuity (tip) when there is a large group of people.

Like I totally get that in the United States. But I live in Canada where waiters and bartenders make minimum wage so all tips are in excess. It was absolutely embarrassing for me one time because my friend bullied me to go out to a restaurant with me and then was looking over my shoulder when I was using the debit machine to see if I tipped and almost caused a scene because he thought I didn't. Told me at a restaurant he worked at, if you did't tip and then came back, your service would be crap and they wouldn't want to serve you. Like these people in this province are making +10$ an hour and expecting me to pay a tip where I lived off the same minimum wage except wasn't allowed tips(they don't allow fast food places to collect tips even if the customer insists).
