As I was reading this I immediatly knew this had to be in Holland. And I was right
No, in Holland you have to check in by sweeping your ticket or card in front of a check in pole or gate. If you don't do that your ticket is invalid, even if you just bought it from the ticket machine but forgot to check in, and there's no way of doing so on the train.
