Thanks, privatisation!

Today, I paid £140 for a train ticket. All the seats were full. When I sat in the corridor the guard yelled at me. I paid £140 to stand outside a stinking train toilet for 7 hours. FML

Go inside the bathroom and lock the door. Make the trip inconvenient for everyone else too.

And no man offered you his seat? MONSTERS! I have a hard time imagining EVERY seat being full, did you just stay in one car for the full seven hours and didn't grab a seat when people got off at various stops? Seems a bit fishy to me.

is that the same as $140? lol

no it's quite a bit more. 1 euro is like 1.40 dollars. so that ticket would cost e in America around $260 if not more.

55, I take it you mean pounds not euros? And its not quite that much, the current exchange rate between dollars and pounds is not that good, it's like 1.5 or 1.6 dollars for every British pound. So the ticket would have cost like $220-$230. That's still a lot though.

Awh that sucks but I totally feel for you, same thing happened to me :(

You can actually claim back a percentage of your train fare if you didn't have a seat for more than 10% of your journey.

was this on virgin trains by any chance? some of their tickets cost more than flying to Europe and the whole experience is just shit. same for every train company in Britain. everyone telling you that you deserve it has obviously never travelled on a train in the uk before! I feel really bad for you because I know your pain, fyl.

that's a standard train ride in the UK.

I think everyone commenting (from UK) must have only been on a train a handful of times. As a student I've travelled to and from uni to home many times, and only a handful of these have I been standing- usually due to the day (Friday/Saturday's) or occasions (Christmas, end of term), or due to the fact I've got a big suitcase and don't fancy hauling it up and down aisles whilst locating a seat. Either book your seat in advance (which is no charge) or sit on your luggage in the gangway. No one has to give up their seat, just find one when people get off before new travellers get on. And no train guard would yell at you, they're not stupid to see there are no seats, and it's only if you're in a dangerous position will they ask you to move.

Who are you Harry Potter? Why are you taking a train
