Thanks, son

Today, I was supposed to catch a 4:40 flight to New York. My 5 year-old son handed me my carry on bag as I left the house. Turns out he had put his older brother's BB gun into my bag to "keep me safe." I missed my flight after I was detained and strip-searched. FML

It sucks when kids do stuff like that, but they really don't know any better. Best is to tell them that they've done wrong, and hope that they won't do it again.

Hope you got compensation or put on another flight for free :/

BB guns are TOYS. If you teach your kids to be careful with their toys and not play dangerously then it is a GOOD THING. Kids who aren't allowed to play with toy guns like BB guns when they're kids are the ones who grow up and shoot people with real guns, because they think guns are for killing people instead of recreational use. That is really, really cute that your kid did that for you. The kid I was babysitting one time gave me a baseball bat when I had to take the garbage outside at night in case any animals were going to try to eat me.

Like an above poster said, "cute" would be a five year old giving his dad a lucky charm. A five year old automatically jumping to weapons (and yes I think BB guns are dangerous and painful) is not cute. Imagine him bringing that to kindergarten to keep himself "safe".

Bb guns are not painful, getting shot point blank in the hand from a 600 fps bb gun didn't hurt, but it does damage flesh.

thank you! some people are just so tight ass. bb guns are harmless.

"Well, he had this here BB gun in plain sight.." ".. Then he must have put the REAL gun up his ass!"

a 5yr old shouldnt have a bb gun buy him a squirt gun

I was raised around guns and had a BB gun from a fairly early age. The first rule I was ever taught was to not point it at something I didn't want dead. As long as that is clear, there isn't _that_ much of a problem with a kid having access to a gun. Furthermore, to all of you talking about shooting people with BB guns, this is NOT OKAY. My most recent one's ammunition goes at 1200 fps and can go through a 2x4 at distance, let alone a person... and you say the OP is being a bad parent? At least nobody was shot with it. NOT knowing how to properly handle, shoot, and respect ANY kind of weapon from an early age is one of the reasons why there are so many accidents related to them. @31: LOL, exactly, it's outrageous enough to be "cute." Until people end up hurt, then it's criminal. @14: It's very possible he was detained for more than an hour. Post-9/11 airport security is not exactly... umm... nice? @OP: It could be worse, they could have perceived it as a deadly threat and shot you. still, sucks.

It's not like he meant any harm. But you still need to keep the BB gun away from small kids.

Ouch. That would have sucked. But hey, at least you know your son loves you a lot! And that is worth ten thousand plane tickets in conjunction with anything else in the world you can possible miss.

OMG that sucks. But you know your son loves you.

That's when you go home and beat the shit out of him.
