The Heimlich maneuver is supposed to break ribs, that's how you know it's working.
As a general rule, if someone is coughing, you DO NOT do the Heimlich. If someone is able to cough, it means they are still managing to get air in their lungs, so let their body sort it out. If someone isn't making any noise and is clutching their throat, that is the universal sign of choking and action needs to be taken by someone with the correct training. And for anyone with formal CPR, First Aid, or Heimlich training who is afraid to act because of our lawsuit happy society, the Good Samaritan laws protect against lawsuits for injuries caused by a potentially lifesaving action preformed by an individual

True, but the Hemmlich is done to get the person choking to cough. OP was already coughing so that lady should have never started the Hemmlich maneuver.
