Any photo you take is your property demand the money or atleast ask for half if your friend refuses then threaten to sue them reguardless time to find a more trustworthy friend
As long as you can prove that the photograph is yours, you have all kinds of legal recourses. The contest people will revoke the winnings for forgery. And thanks to copywrite law, you do have protections.
This is not entirely true. If he released the rights then he does not own the photograph. When a client commissions a photograph by me, for example for a fashion shoot, I no longer own the rights to the photo as stated in a standard rights releasing contract. If however, we're talking about a couple of high schoolers, then I doubt the above scenario applies. In my line of work however, I frequently give up IP rights of images.
