The real head scratcher here is how the OP got as far as he did without knowing she had 17 cats. I can't imagine someone that into having cats NOT talking about them at some point before reaching boyfriend/girlfriend. Either OP isn't very good at listening, or she's a very strange new breed of krazy kat lady.

Since its his first time over, they may not really know each other that well yet... Some people move into relationships rather quickly before really knowing a person for very long or very well...
