Today, a co-worker and I walked out of our office at the same time. He got in his car, which was parked right out front. I asked him what I had to do to get a sweet parking spot like that. He rolled up his pant leg and show me his prosthesis. He was in the handicapped spot. FML

you should've proceeded to buckle your knees and fall to the ground screaming "heeeeelp! help!"

Don't feel too badly. It happens to all of us.

I know a man with a prosthetic leg - if you didn't know he was an amputee you'd be hardpressed to guess. Even knowing he has one, a lot of people are unable to determine which of his legs are amputated because his limp is so slight.

Well. He should be happy people don't notice it in day to day life. Just don't start treating him differently now, that'd be bad...

It doesn't sound like he was offended. You might be embarrassed but your life is hardly ******.

...so? Just laugh and say "oops, sorry!" and make sure they aren't seriously offended.

im an amputee (left leg, below knee), and no one can tell unless i tell them. i still park in the handicap spot at work, because we have a huge lot. not all amputees get offended or have a limp.

Most handicapped people don't mind their handicaps and aren't offended by questions. Not a FYL, but not YDI either. He was most likely pleased that you couldn't tell.

I just don't understand how you didn't see the handicap parking sign?

For those of you that told the guy he's an asshole for not knowing the guy had a false leg, you obviously have not seen many people with prosthetics. It's nearly impossible to tell the difference between someone with a prosthetic leg and someone with a real leg. Also, it's not like people go around telling everyone they meet, "HAY GUYS, I'M AN AMPUTEE LAWL". The entire point of making such incredible mechanisms is so that amputees are able to continue living a normal life without having to feel like they're disabled. To the OP: It's not a big deal. You had no idea that he had a false leg, so I highly doubt you offended him.
