Today, a little girl at work was coloring a picture that said "Best Dad" on it. Wanting to be nice I asked her if she was making it for her dad for father's day. She looked at me with a sad face and said, "I don't have a dad..." FML

Today, at work, a little girl was misbehaving. Her dad told her that she would look like me when she grows up. The little girl look horrified while Daddy laughed and kept reassuring her he was "just kidding." FML

Today, I went into work and noticed one of my fellow colleagues had a large bunch of flowers on her desk. As soon as I saw her, I immediately said, "Happy Birthday!" Everyone went quiet. It wasn't her birthday; her father had died. FML

Today, I asked a coworker what she'd bought her dad for father's day. She said that she got him some flowers, and I laughed because I thought it was a rather feminine gift for a man. I later found out that the flowers were for his grave. FML

Today, I have been teaching my 5 year-old step-daughter how to read and write. She came bounding up to me with a piece of paper and said, "look what I did". It was a letter that said "My dad misses my real mommy, not you". FML

Today, as I was taking my three year-old daughter home from daycare, she asked where her daddy was. I tried to tell her that I was her father, but she answered, "No, not you! My other daddy!" I've got some talking to do tonight. FML

Today, I was texting a friend of mine. She mentioned it was her dad's birthday. I typed, "Tell him 'Happy Birthday' from me!" and as I pressed send, I remembered her dad was dead. FML

#49: There is a diff. between your dad being dead & your dad just gone. Which one were you because if you were the latter you DON'T understand. Sides, everyone is different you know. OP: Not really your fault, she doesnt know. People say stuff about my dad all the time, and I tell them they feel bad but I'm just like it's okay you couldn't have known. She'll understand one day.

That's sad stuff. If I was in your place, I would've gone quiet for a minute before complimenting her on her color choice and creativity. Anything to veer the subject away from not having a dad. Poor kid.

Yeah, HOW DARE the OP not read her mind and KNOW that she didn't have a dad. *rolls eyes* I didn't have a dad growing up, and I know how the little girl feels, but it's definitely not the OP's fault. I think it was nice of the OP to try and start a conversation with her.
