Perhaps he has already been through a few close losses? I lost several people close to me at a young age and again this year. This time although I cared deeply for them I felt not numb but accepting of it all. Death happens. The only thing you can do about its grieve by remembering the good times you had and moving forward. The first two people I lost were my parents who committed suicide together when I was 18. The only way to healthily deal with loss is to honor them by loving them and channeling that love and honoring their memory by never forgetting them. If he hasn't dealt with loss and numb to the losing of someone then he is just being an ass.
