Today, after 3 days of interrupted sleep, I confronted my new neighbor about the noise his wife keeps making during their "private time". He then let me know the noise is actually from his daughter, who's mentally disabled and isn't taking the move well. FML

No way you could've known OP. Don't be too hard on yourself

I kind of wonder if it might have been better for the new people to introduce themselves and make their neighbors aware of the potential problem. If his daughter isn't typical, it's not like it would be a new thing for them. I have an autistic client who spent the night at my house and woke himself up at five am screaming and crying and hitting himself and I'm sure it woke the neighbors, but if he lived with me full-time I'd have at least warned the people around me. Granted, it's not really polite to go to your new neighbor and say "your wife makes too much noise when you're screwing her."

Maybe you could help by asking her parents what she likes and maybe giving her a gift. It might help her settle in.

you should ask them if they have any duct tape

That can't be easy for her family or the other neighbors near them. I hope you apologized to the neighbors for your misconception. In the meantime, get a white noise machine and use it until the child adjusts to her new home.

It's all in your use of words. You could've just asked if they could keep the noise down at late hours due to your inability to sleep. Don't be an ass and quickly assume things. You couldn't have known but still, they'll know what noise you're talking about without you pointing it out

You definitely could have been more delicate in bringing it up - "hey, not sure if you know, but the walls are a little thin. I think I've been hearing your tv?" YDI because you decided to talk to your neighbour about his sex life instead of having a little tact.

You couldn't have known but I will have I have a nonverbal handicapped daughter who only grunts, moans and screams. I told my husband, This is why we would never be able to live in an apartment.
