Today, after 3 hours of sleep, I had to rush to my grandmother's house because she fell and couldn't get up. An embarrassed, half-naked old lady, a very wet rug, an ambulance and a trip to the hospital later, and she still refuses to use her cane and walker. I hope I'm not this stubborn when I'm old. FML

OP here~ Yes, she's okay, no injuries, and for those of you saying, "Get life alert" - She already HAS life alert but refuses to wear it...Her stubbornness has no limits. She would rather have her family worry and put her life in jeopardy than lose her pride and "independence". We're gonna see about in-home care so that we don't have to worry all the time. Thanks for all the support~ :) I can only hope that one day my grandmother comes to her senses, what little she has left.

I will never be an old man. To me, old age is always 15 years older than I am.

Maybe she needs life alert. But seriously, hope she is ok!

Well it's understandable because to her, using a cane would probably be like giving up some independence and recognizing that she needs help. I know everyone reaches that age but it must be hard to make that transition from not needing any help to needing help to even walk.

But needing to call a paramedic whenever she falls down because she can't get herself up again makes her even more dependent on others than using a cane would.

Yeah I suppose you're right. I'm just trying to look at it from her perspective.

Using mobility aids actually will give her back some independence. Maybe OP could explain this to grandma and convince her to use them .

My grandpa is the exact same way! Terrible balance, yet refuses to use a cane. I can understand not wanting to give up some degree of freedom, but everyone in the family is constantly worried that he could get seriously hurt. I feel your frustration, OP.

You could always put her in a home for the elderly.

Strip all of her freedoms over a fall? I think not!

Some suggestions from an occupational therapist: maybe some therapy could work on her strength and balance and maybe she will listen to a therapist tell her to use a cane or walker. Also if she can see that there are plenty of people younger than her that use one. Good luck.

I think I have the same grandma! Unfortunately, it took several falls before she finally started using her walker. Most of them were just bruises and soreness. The last one resulted in a late-night hospital trip and shoulder surgery. But she didn't "want to be a bother." Yes, a hospital trip, then another day in the hospital, and waiting on you hand and foot all day every day for 6 to 8 weeks is a lot less of a bother then coming in and pushing your walker back to the bed for you after it rolled away. Sorry OP, if your grandmother is like mine, she probably still won't use her cane and walker. Good luck! And thank you for caring enough about her to go help her.

at least she's okay. and hopefully she'll stay okay..good luck

A lot of folks are too proud to use something we need. Don't fret too bad, I had the same problem with my grandmother. And I am having the same problem with my mother. She's had 4 back surgeries and still refuses to use her cane or her walker

It's one of he hardest things in the world, young or old, is to admit that you can't do it on your own and you need help.
