Today, after 3 hours of sleep, I had to rush to my grandmother's house because she fell and couldn't get up. An embarrassed, half-naked old lady, a very wet rug, an ambulance and a trip to the hospital later, and she still refuses to use her cane and walker. I hope I'm not this stubborn when I'm old. FML

OP here~ Yes, she's okay, no injuries, and for those of you saying, "Get life alert" - She already HAS life alert but refuses to wear it...Her stubbornness has no limits. She would rather have her family worry and put her life in jeopardy than lose her pride and "independence". We're gonna see about in-home care so that we don't have to worry all the time. Thanks for all the support~ :) I can only hope that one day my grandmother comes to her senses, what little she has left.

I will never be an old man. To me, old age is always 15 years older than I am.

Had the same situation for years with my grandad. Was awful... He refused all walkers and canes. Kept falling. 3am. Floor. Urine everywhere. Too many times :(

this is worrisome if she lives alone.. Might be time for a group home. I say this only because my great aunt was the same way, and she ended up breaking her hip. We tried to keep her independence for as long as possible but she was laying on the floor unable to reach a phone, it became an issue for her own safety.

Don't just put them in homes. Most people hate it. In-home care is much better if it's possible. In their own house and everything.

Did she choice one those wheelchairs?

Poor Granny. Getting old is no fun, and I suspect that accepting it is even harder for an independent person.

When you've become a non-walking advertisement for Life Alert, jut use the cane. I use a walking stick on my bad days with my knees and bad ankle, and I'm barely an adult. What good is having a cane if you don't use it? Being able to wave it around and threaten kids off your lawn is one of the perks of getting old!

My nana is exactly the same. Keeps falling, but refuses to use her cane. And she keeps refusing to take her meds to help her breathe, because she 'would rather be able to sing'. And because of this, she has had at least 6 heart attacks in the last few months :/

This is the moment when life alert is needed. "Help, I've fallen and can't get up"

My grandmother is (semi) senile and nearly blind from macular degeneration- so even though she's fairly young, my mom and I have insisted NO driving!! She's convinced lasik will fix her vision and then she wants to start driving again. Did I mention she thinks her cats can (literally) talk to her? She just says they are shy when company comes over. She claims to have raccoons in her attic. Except... she has no attic. Bats in the belfry? Yes, I think that's quite possible.

I can relate, my mother is the same. It is dreadful to walk with a cane, she feels she is losing her independance. Make it easier for her by advising her that the cane is only needed when standing up after a stay in bed or on a chair. Since I offered my mom a folding cane she can put in her backbag, she went back to long walks and hikes :-) And don't worry. You'll be as stubborn, it's genetic!
