Today, after an exhausting weekend of work, I decided to take a nap. I was awoken several hours later by my mother-in-law knocking on my door. Apparently my 11-year-old called up grandma to complain that she was hungry and that mum was sleeping instead of cooking dinner. FML

FYL for living close enough to your mother in law that she can knock on your door without buying a plane ticket first.

I knew the concept of responsibility when I was 9! when I was 10 I was ten I was at least able to cook eggs in a couple ways. my mom worked nights and was always exhausted. she still cooked most of the time but on the rare occasions she didn't, I was able to step up. kids today are too over babied. so glad I'm not growing up with this generation

I hope that this is a wake up call for you OP. Teach your kid to cook, or at the very least make a sandwich. If the kid can find or remember grandmas number they are old enough to cook.

The new generations are seriously useless. I've been cooking and cleaning since I was 5 because my mother was ill and as a single parent had to work as much as possible. YDI for not giving the kid some responsibilities and teaching them to understand the situation and care.

Take note to the "several hours later" there. Seems like your nap went plenty long enough.

She was exhausted. It wasn't like she was just tired and needed a pick me up.

I agree that 11 year olds should be able to cook for themselves, but whose responsibility is it to teach them? Their parents, of course! If the child never had to make dinner for herself before than can you really blame her for not knowing how. It doesn't make her a brat, it makes her mom an irresponsible.

What if the kid knows but is just lazy and likes causing a fuss because they know they'll get attention?

Why is your 11 year old using the phone without permission anyways?

In today's society kids have mobile phones.

At 11, the kid could probably have fed himself. But, a "nap" doesn't last several hours...

It can, if you're at the end of a 2 week stretch of being on call with several middle of the night deaths and a full 8 hours of work per day at the same time.

When I was 11, I already knew how to make my own food. Of course, I'm still only allowed to use the microwave when my family's sleeping, but an 11 year old should know how to at least use a microwave.
