Ah, the golden handcuffs. I've been there.
Plot your exit. And before you tell him that you're leaving, be ballsy and demand your promotion or else. Go full tilt. Then if he gives it to you say, "psych I'm out."
I would start sprucing up your LinkedIn profile and getting your résumé out there. You deserve better then that!
Sounds like it's time to watch Office Space for some inspiration.
I was told something similar at my last job after interviewing for a supervisor position, but by management above my old boss (he wanted me to get the job). Then layoffs came a few months later, I ended my probationary period at my new job with a promotion. Might be time for a change. Good luck OP.
Time to use up all your sick days and vacation time. See how he likes managing without you.
I had a similar thing happen to me. My boss claimed that since we're a franchise store I could only be given a 29¢ raise..he got a $100 raise....doing 90% less work than when I started because he "delegates" most of his work to me.
Your boss sounds like a real ass hole to me

In other words, your boss knows you would fast track to his position and he is afraid you would surpass him
he could at least give you a raise.
