I believe in CA as long as you show up on a day within two weeks of your summons you should be fine. But you might also consider checking your mail more often. CA gives you at least a months notice for jury duty (I've been summoned twice in the past two years :P)
FAIL
Jury duty notices are generally sent put 30-45 days in advance of the report-date. Had your power cut off? Your phone? You're a ******* idiot.
MAIL, you know the stuff that you recieve in a MAILbox or a P.O box
He's saying that that's a long time to not go through one's mail and that maybe a bill is in there too, & unpaid.
Don't you think you would have noticed some important looking markings on the envelope? I've seen jury summons envelopes (my parents have been summoned) and there was like our state seal on it or something. I think that would probably make any smart person open immediately.
What a way to go, genius. Just call in to reschedule and they should oblige. Ignore it and you could face anything up to and including fines and/or even time in jail.

Maybe you should try being a functioning member of society who opens her mail when it arrives.
You should have checked the envelope. Important mail like that is usually marked so you don't ignore it.
