Thieving little *****. My 11yr old nephew had his ipod touch stolen from his backpack. My brother bought him another one and lets him bring it to school as well......its only a matter of time before it gets stolen, again. I hope OP has the "find my phone" app?

OP, if you are teaching a class on morals or law then it's going to be a long year.

Sounds like you can't trust any of them. Keep personal items locked up or on you 24/7. Good luck. Maybe some how turn into the cool teacher and they won't do that...maybe. At least to win their trust.
