There are rumors, not conspiracy theory's,that he is not real and that it was a group of people that used the name as a cover.

It's one thing to believe he was a /different/ person than the one who actually wrote plays attributed to him. It's an entirely different thing to think that a person named William Shakespeare never existed, which he certainly did...

A few decades back there were some otherwise educated, intelligent people who went around claiming that William Shakespeare did not write the plays and poems that are attributed to him. They came up with all kind of "proof" by means of numerology and acrostics and what-have-you found in his works. The whole thing is about as credible as people who claim that "Paul is dead" and find "proof" by staring at the cover of the Sgt. Pepper album.

The Shakespeare authorship debate isn't nothing. Some claim that it's just a pseudonym that a company of actors used or that some of the plays are just attributed to a famous name to be more popular.

Some historians say it was a group of people that wrote his plays and that was their "pen name". Very little is known about him so your mom might be right.
