Geico is notorious for that sort of flightiness. Go with USAA, if you have any family (parents, uncle, aunt, etc) that are or were military, that you can use to be eligible. I've found USAA is cheaper than Geico to begin with, and the coverage just as good, if not better. Best of luck, OP!
You'd have to be THAT blind to accidentally write a completely wrong plate number. That officer, or even better a superior, really needs to talk to whatever person at Geico doesn't believe you.
they should have had to have taken a drivers license number too, that should have made GEICO think twice also realizing it wasn't them...then again I had issues with GEICO too
Something like this happened to me. If GEICO dropped you then so be it. You need insurance. Get new coverage. If you have a long and good history it was likely an automated procedure that happened that involved no human intervention. Work it out and they should reinstate you and cover costs of your current insurance as credit. Least, thats what happened is my situation. They covered 6 months of insurance payments just to bring me back on (this wasn't Geico btw).
GEICO is too busy making commercials and raking in money to actually serve policyholders. The gecko "It's what you do" I just saved 15% by switching to GEICO Etc, etc.
From their perspective, it probably looks like you got a DUI, but than got a friend to get the ticket dismissed. FYL but it probably happens that way far more often than a mistake.
You're better off without them anyway. Geico is insanely expensive and has horrifically crappy service. Just be glad you weren't in an accident with them - I have heard some truly horrific stories.

Call them and complain, have them contact the DMV if needed. These things do happen but it can be fixed.
Geico. 15 seconds can **** you over 15% or more.
